Welcome Kdottie Friends! We are happy to welcome a new blog series entitled "WEEKEND READS!"
As an avid reader, both my mom and I love to read in the summertime! There is nothing better then relaxing on the beach, drinking a margarita and reading a good book. Or in our case.. sitting in the "happy hut" (our gazebo on our back deck), drinking a margarita and reading a good book.
So I thought I would start off our "Weekend Reads" with a few books from the YA genre. YES YES I know. I'm old (I'm approaching 30 in a few years... cue early onset midlife crisis) and should probably be past the YA section of Barnes & Noble.. HOWEVER, I'm an equal opportunity reader and if it is good, I don't really mind what genre it is placed in at the bookstore.
SO HERE YOU GO: Ashley's Weekend Reads for July 5-7th, 2013.
Cafe Reading Rating:
Divergent and Insurgent are the first two books in a trilogy by Veronica Roth. I believe the 3rd comes out this October. There is DEFINITELY a reason that this is on the top of the charts! It is a dystopian novel that is set in Chicago. This story is about a dysfunctional society that is broken up into Factions. Once teenagers become a certain age, they take a test to see what Faction they should join based on their character & beliefs. Of course our heroine of the series, TRIS, has a few complications from that test and chaos in sues. The characters, plot, action sequences and pace of these books are absolutely incredible! I believe it took about 2 days for me to finish each one they were THAT good! I don't want to spoil any of the books, but you can always go on AMAZON or B&N and check out the description of the plot. There is a movie coming out next spring based on these novels, and I for one will be going to see the movie on opening day.
Let the Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger was a fantastic book. I believe that this is becoming a series in the near future. This is the story of a boy, Vane, who is adopted as a child after his parents die in a tornado. He can't remember anything but has dreams of a girl,Audra, who we later find out was his childhood BFF and current guardian. Anyway, he is in LOVE with his dream girl, and when he finally meets her he discovers that he is not human. Both of them are sylphs which means they can talk to the wind and make things happen with the wind... Basically this is romantic, paranormal story that is quite unique from other books in that genre. Yes, you kind of have to just go there with the author and story and except the fact that there is such a thing as sylphs. However, the story and character development is amazing. It got a little slow in the middle, but definitely made up for it at the end with lots of twists and turns. I absolutely recommend this book!
Legend and Prodigy: A Legend Novel are the first two books this series by Marie Lu. This is also a dystopian novel based on a boy and girl from opposite sides of the social scale. The girl, June, is in the upper class and is the best up and coming military solider in this society. Day, the boy, is the society's worst criminal from the slums of what used to be Los Angeles. They meet, there is romance, there is action, there is a lot going on in these two novels. One of those stories that you never know who to trust. This has a lot of world development and a very corrupt government. An absolute MUST READ! I believe the 3rd book comes out this November.

Anna Dressed in Blood and Girl of Nightmares (Anna Dressed in Blood) is a two book series by Kendare Blake. First, lets talk about how amazing the cover art is on these books... brilliant. This is another series that you have to just GO WITH IT, and not question the fact that our main character, Cas, goes around with his mom and kills ghosts that are killing innocent people- which is what his dad did before he was killed by a ghost. A different type of family business but whateves! Cas moves to Canada and meets Thomas and Carmel who become his partners-in-crime. There are a lot of ghost stories, vivid imagery, and scary components to these novels... so if you have a weak stomach you might want to steer clear of this story. The plot is brilliant and way different from what I have ever read! Our main ghost, Anna, comes from a painful past in the 1950s. I was actually kind of surprised that these two books were in the YA genre because of their graphic detail and mature storyline. I wish this story could have continued on into many more books, however Kendare Blake gives the reader a very good ending that really completes the story. You don't feel that she left you hanging or that you wasted your time on 2 books to get a less then stellar ending. Again, a MUST READ if you haven't already!
I know, I know! Everyone loves City of Bones (Mortal Instruments, The) by Cassandra Clare... I really wish I would have liked this book more! Maybe it was all the hype and the upcoming movie, but this story just didn't do it for me. I liked aspects of the book, but I found it very hard to get through. There are just so many characters and types of paranormal creatures that I frankly got burnt out in the middle of the book. I think Cassandra Clare's writing is wonderful, I just had a hard time getting into the story. Our main character , is suddenly dropped into this paranormal, crazy world and it doesn't really phase her at all... Personally, if I were in her situation I would have flipped my s&^% and definitely been slightly hectic and paranoid... I do want to give the 2nd book a chance as well as her other series Infernal Devices. I hope to read those before the end of the year and maybe my thoughts will change for the better!
